Q: Which type of strings does my autoharp use?

String Type: A model strings fits most autoharps made before 1967 or that have pegs sticking out at the bottom of the instrument.autoharpautoharp  Strings are usually twisted into a loop (Image left) although some brands do have a small grommet on the endheld securely by placing the string over the pegs sticking out at the bottom of the instrument.  The pegs may have a removable plastic cover to prevent pegs from snagging on clothing.

autoharpSchreiber Old A model strings (Image left) are used on a variety of   instruments including Evoharps and OS73c.
autoharpThe Model A Reissue OS73c from Oscar Schmidt is yet another variation. Although it can take a similar type of string, it really is unique.
String length on the OS73 autoharps is a little longer than on the original pre-1967 instruments.  On the OS73 models, the length of the 1F string from bridge to bridge is 19".  (This contrasts with 18-1/2" on the pre-1967 models).

String Type: B model strings are the most common on Oscar Schmidt and Luthier Autoharps. autoharp   The most distinctive feature of the model B string type is the slotted aluminium anchor bar, any fine tuners would replace that.  B type strings have a small, thick washer on one end known as a ball end.  The ball end slots into an aluminium anchor bar or sometimes a fine tuner system, holding it securely (Images below).

Custom Strings are mainly used on Luthier Autoharps however they can be added to any instrument to help improve sound.  They can also be used to repair or replace strings on some of the more unusual autoharps.  Alec Anness is the only UK based custom autoharp string maker.

autoharp Chromaharp Caroler – 43 Strings 27 Chords with an additional silencer bar. This can be played on a table without crossing your arms, a perfect choice for those who are unable to hold an autoharp up in front Appalachian style. It can also be use Appalachian style by left handed players.  There is a full lower octave giving this instrument a full sound on all the strings.   There are 27 playable chord bars, adding chords not found on 21 chord autoharps Bm, E, Cm, Fm, Bbm, Db, Eb7.  It was produced around the 1970s. It is unusual in that it is configured in the mirror image of a conventional autoharp.
autoharpSchreiber make custom strings to replace the strings on these unique instruments.

Q: Is my autoharp an A or B Model?

The primary identifier is just below the tuning pins.
autoharp Body Model A type bridge, which would have a wooden platform and metal bridge rod running just below the tuning pins. Model A bridge platform can give a better resonance to strings. Model A body types can be found on vintage instruments and numerous newer brands. Most Luthier Autoharps including ones made in UK by Alec Anness are primarily Model A.

autoharpBody Model B type bridge, which would have notched bridge pins situated just below the tuning pins. Many Oscar Schmidt autoharps have a Model B body. Other brands including Ashbury also include some Model B autoharps in their range. Fewer luthier Autoharps have a Model B body, however there are some out there including Daigle’s Tahoma design Autoharp.

TIP: Model A or Model B body does NOT always use Type A or Type B strings respectively. Always Check!

Q: I live in Scotland where can I see and play an autoharp in the real world before I decide to buy one?

I would be happy to let you play any instrument I have in stock.  I am based in central Scotland but often travel.  If you contact me and send your postcode I may be able to bring an instrument to you or you can come to me?
There is also an annual Scottish Autoharp Weekend held in the Dumfriesshire festival village of Moniaive in the summer.  UK Autoharps can supply ‘loaner’ autoharps to UKA members for a small fee.  More than a decade ago this is where I first got the opportunity to ‘see and play an autoharp in the real world’.
There are very few music shops in the UK that stock autoharps. In my experience   those that do never have an autoharp in tune ready to play.  If any of the staff in these stores have any idea about autoharps I have sadly yet to find one.  I once went into a well-known Music Shop in Glasgow after I noticed an autoharp on display.  Not only was it out of tune it had a string missing and the chord bars had not been ‘set-up’ correctly.  The staff were absolutely clueless.  Turns out they did not have an autoharp tuning key, strings or felts in stock and were unsure they ever would. No one in the shop knew how to tune or fix it anyway.

Q: Where did you get your beautiful chord bars?

I  autoharp chord barspurchased them more than a decade ago. They were hand made by Doug Curran in the Scottish Borders.  Sadly Doug passed away in 2023.  I love the feel of these wooden bars and they have served me well or for more than a decade.

autoharp chord bars These bars have a “quick release” mechanism, (chord bar holders are held in place by small neodymium magnets).  This allows me to swap over chord bars and replace with another if needed for a particular tune. autoharp chord bars
Generally I stick to the Bryan Bowers chord bar layout, also known as a “Bluegrass” or “Americana” setup (See image on right). I find the setup of Major chords in the centre more ergonomic, but it may be just a personal choice. Also the new chords Bm, F#m and E are more useful to me than the ones replaced in a standard setup Ab, Bb7 and Cm.

Q: I have an old autoharp with roses on the front. What is it worth?

Autoharp image

A: If it looks something like this, the short answer is, "Sorry, not a lot." These Rosen autoharps are not practical musical instruments, and they are definitely not recommended. With age and temperature changes, cracks can form on these autoharps and other vintage instruments weakening structural integrity. Thousands of pounds of pressure caused by tight strings have caused these instruments to explode. Loosen the strings NOW. As a musical instrument most vintage 3,6 or 12 chord bar instruments are not worth a beginners investment. These damaged vintage type autoharps can make a pretty wall-hanging!

Q: Which Autoharp would you recommend for a child to play?

Autoharp Weans

Look for a pre-loved 6, 12 or 15 bar autoharp with between 18 and 25 strings. These instruments tend to be smaller and more suibtable for little arms and hands. Smaller instruments will often be vintage instruments so it is paramount they have been inspected properly before purchase ensuring the autoharp has no structural damage such as cracks, splits, or warping of the wood and the pins have no signs of rust.  These vintage instruments usually need a full refurbishment including new strings, felts and improvements to chord bar set up.   Autoharp Witch Shop stocks fully refurbished autoharps for children.
There are also some beautiful autoharps for children which can be built to order in the UK by Autoharp Luthier Alec Anness or by other luthiers across the ocean.  This can be expensive when import duty and postage is added.

How do I transport or package an autoharp safely?

Whether you are taking your autoharp on a road trip, or plan to ship an autoharp. There are a few simple steps you can take to help ensure the autoharp arrives at its destination safely.

1. Secure The Chord Bars
Place a piece of card between the strings and chord bar felts. This will stop the bars rattling around in transit

2. Wrap it up cosy and keep dry
a. If you are taking your instrument with you in a case it’s a good idea for extra protection to wrap it in a towel or an autoharp cosy (handmade custom quilt, just like a sleeping bag for an autoharp). Be aware these are only for short journeys as they will gather moisture (having a bag of silica in your autoharp case can help, especially if you live in a damp climate).
b. For P&P - Wrap the instrument in bubble wrap. DO NOT use tape to secure directly on the autoharp body.

3. Hard Exterior Autoharp Hard Case
a. Carrying your instrument in an autoharp bag or case is always recommended.
b. For P&P - If the autoharp is not in a HARD CASE, It’s time to make one by boxing the autoharp with strong cardboard. If you do not have a suitable cardboard box just wrap the autoharp with old cardboard boxes and tape it up securely.

4. Keep the rain and moisture out
a. In damp climate keep a bag or two of silica gel in your case. If like me you are in the outdoors carrying your instrument in the rain as extra protection a rain poncho like the ones used at festivals are ideal to cover your autoharp case.
b. For P&P – Take the boxed up autoharp and place in a large plastic bag (Garden waste bags are perfect for this purpose). Tape it up securely.

5. Label it
a. It is recommended your contact details are either on a discreet sticker on your instrument or on a label on your case or bag.
b. For P&P – Always mark the package clearly FRAGILE. Ensure to add correct and clear SENDER and DELIVERY address. It is advised to insure and track the package.

Q: What’s the difference between a CHROMATIC and a DIATONIC autoharp?

autoharp

A: With CHROMATIC you can play in a variety of keys, and it’s easier to play along with other musicians. Unlike a guitar or banjo, you won’t need a capo!  You are only limited to the tunes you can play by your choice of chord bar set up (chord bars can be changed to suit your needs by cutting new felts).  Full size chromatic autoharps generally have 36 strings which cover more than 2 octaves (see image on left).

A chromatic autoharp can be converted to a DIATONIC autoharp.  Diatonic autoharps are set up in one, two, or occasionally three keys. (Not to be confused with chord bars). The most common Keys for a diatonic set up are single F, dual F/C or G/D, or G/D/partial A ’harps. This means that many strings (notes) are no longer needed as they are not in the chosen chords.    These strings (notes) are replaced with relevant strings and are doubled up,  giving the autoharp a much richer sound and you can use an ‘open chord’ playing technique.  I believe  Diatonic autoharps can also make melody playing simpler with doubled up strings and sometimes lock bars locking out all unwanted notes in a particular key, plucking a particular string just becomes less challenging.  Some experienced players have several autoharps, all in different key combinations, allowing them to play a larger variety of tunes. With the one size fits all chromatic autoharp it will save you carrying multiple instruments to the pub for a music session.

Q: What is the best type of instrument for a beginner autoharpist?

The simple answer is a 36 string, 21-bar chromatic instrument.   The most popular brands in the UK are Oscar Schmidt and Ashbury. There are many more manufactured brands available especially in the second hand market.  There is little difference in the quality of modern autoharp brands. There can be a variation in the tone of individual autoharps. Whenever possible play the instrument before buying. Particularly with some older autoharps, you'll want to make certain that it stays in tune and so, if possible, you should play it on two different days and for a period of time.
autoharp chord bars Chord Bars
A new autoharp comes with a standard chord set up consisting of 21 chords (See image on right).  I would recommend a simple alteration to the Bryan Bowers chord bar layout, also known as a “Bluegrass” or “ Americana” setup autoharp chord bars(See image on left). I find the setup of Major chords in the centre more ergonomic, but it may be just a personal choice. Also the new chords Bm, F#m and E are more useful to me than the ones replaced in a standard setup Ab, Bb7 and Cm.
Body Type
body model B The identifying factor is just below the tuning pins at the bridge. Body Model B type autoharps have notched bridge pins. body model ABody Model A type would have a wooden platform and metal bridge rod running just below the tuning pins. Model A bridge platform can give a better resonance to strings.
Where and what to Buy?
I would recommend as a first instrument buying either a professionally refurbished pre-loved autoharp or a new autoharp from a reputable dealer.(Autoharps In Stock NOW!)   If buying new or pre-loved instruments, ALL will need setup (Chord bars, springs and felts aligned to give smoothest action) and tuned before playing, so ensure you purchase from a source that can help with these services and understand the instrument that they are selling to you. Many used autoharps for sale online come with unseen faults that make them unplayable or extremely expensive to repair.  “Buyer Beware!!” Basic refurbishment including new strings and felts for chord bars may cost around £100.  Strings and felts are both consumables but with the correct care can last for years.
It is also possible to buy a hand-made autoharp.  Luthier autoharps are often more than three times the expense of a factory built brand, however there is a huge difference in the sound of the instrument and they look much prettier. Alec Anness is the only known autoharp Luthier in Britain.
Strap Buttons?
lap style If you do not plan to play lap style (Neriah and Kenneth Benfield in 1964 are shown on left) and would prefer to cuddle your instrument while playing. (Guy Padfield performing at the Scottish Autoharp Weekend) I recommend your instrument has strap buttons fitted.autoharp Wearing a strap will help to enable you to play in a position that will hopefully prevent repetitive strain injuries and help with posture?  My favourite strap is known as the autoharp strapSlider Strap and is harness like, offering a better support and balance of the autoharp on my body than a single guitar like strap does.
Amplified or Acoustic?
Generally autoharps can be quiet instruments. If you plan to record or play with other musicians I strongly recommend ensuring you have a pickup, this may cost another £100+. It is much easier to tune the autoharp in a noisy environment if you can plug an electronic tuner into a fitted pick up.

Q: Is there anything I should be aware of before purchasing an autoharp second hand?

autoharp
  • Does the instrument have any splits or cracks in the wood, or separation of the joints?
  • Are there signs of dishing of the top of the autoharp (seen by looking across the top from the side to ensure that it doesn't dip towards the sound hole – or, less commonly, bulge upwards.)
  • autoharp
  • Are the tuning pins tight and without rust? If they are not in good condition, it can be difficult to tune the instrument or keep it in tune.

***! IF AN AUTOHARP HAS ANY OF THE ABOVE FLAWS, DON'T BUY IT!***

More questions to ask - autoharp consumables and accessories?

These items and services can be purchased in the Autoharp Witch Shop. If you have any questions, please contact me.

  • Are the chord bar felts in good condition and level? Not rutted and grooved by the years of pressure pushing down on strings when playing. (Felts can be bought, however the job of replacing them can be time consuming and footery.)
  • Do the chord bars have a smooth action when buttons are pressed? If they clatter, shake and wobble they can sometimes be refurbished with some TLC, a little know how, new springs and some sticky felt.
  • Are the strings shiny and without rust?
  • Is a tuning wrench included? (L-shape or the T-shape is my preference)
  • Does it come with a separate electronic tuner?
  • Are finger picks included? The majority of autoharpers use finger picks.
  • Does the autoharp have strap buttons fitted and come with a strap?
  • If required: Is the autoharp fitted with a pick up?
  • If desired: Is the autoharp fitted with fine tuners?

Q: What are Fine Tuners and do I need them?

autoharp

Short answer No, but they are a nice luxury. Small cams hold the strings with screws. An allen key can be used to ‘fine tune’ strings.    This process is simpler and quicker to 'fine tune' strings than using a tuning key on the the normal tuning pins at the top of instrument..

Q: Which finger picks are best?

There are so many on the market and it really is all about personal choice and the sound you want to achieve, I have even seen some folks(usualy guitarists and weans) playing an autoharp with a plectrum.
autoharpI have natural long strong fingernails and often play without picks (instead I carry super glue for emergency broken nails) but I still use picks on occasion, especially in circumstances where I want to improve the volume or but keep a sound as natural to my finger nails as possible. My preference is 4 Alaska style celluloid finger picks and plastic thumb pick. Delrin picks also produce a very soft, natural sound on the strings.
If possible try a few styles of finger picks in different materials. Steel, nickel, brass, plastic, celluloid, polycarbonate, delrin, there are so many to choose from and it really is a personal thing.
